One of my all time favorite series (after Harry Potter, of course), is the Gemma Doyle trilogy. A Great and Terrible Beauty, Rebel Angels, and The Sweet Far Thing chronicle the unlikely magical heroine’s journey from spoiled English schoolgirl with a wry sense of humor to savior of the world as we know it. And along the way, she meets an Indian boy named Kartik who helps her with this journey.
Kartik is undoubtedly one of the hottest fictional characters known to young adult readers. He’s tall, dark, handsome, and mysterious. What more could a girl want?
Although Gemma finally gets her crap together sometime in the late second book and early third, she’s definitely not woman enough for Kartik.
First of all, she’s always been more privileged than him, even when she was living in India and not in “proper” English society. Although I’m not poor, I don’t have a grandmother trying to auction me off to better my position in society. I also don’t have any background in thinking that non-whites are below me. Gemma has grown up in a period where Indians are looked upon as inferior.
Second of all, Gemma doesn’t want all the adventures she gets to be apart of, at least not at first. She’s way too girly for a man like Kartik, and I think my contradictory gender roles are just what he needs. I can be feminine when needed, but I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty. I also don’t have spoiled, rich, preppy friends who get in the way and end up all evil.
Bonus points: Travel, excitement, confidence.
