Are you an Authoritarian or Libertarian?

Submitted by AP Partner on July 7, 2008 - 09:35.

Having trouble understanding what the differences are between republican and democrat? Tired of people asking you where you stand and you not knowing? Finally the answers to your questions.

Governments are based on Two idea, Authoritarian or Libertarian. The way you can look at is a line that shows were people stand. On the Right you have Authoritarian (more government control) while on the Left is Libertarian (less government control).

the line is similar to a PH scale in Science by the fact the further to one direction you go the more radical it gets. To the Far Right you have Totalitarianism, total control (NAZI Germany or Communist Russia) and to the Far Left you have Anarchism, or no government.

America is right in the middle and the sides you have in American politics are Democrats (Libertarians) and Republicans (Authoritarians) and this shows you were the politics lines lay.

Are you Authoritarian or Libertarian? Just look at what you want from your government to answer that Question.

You know, I've always been told by my parents that we're democrats and I never knew why, and this really helped. Thanks a bunch Ben!

By the way, this is Cody from school. My name on the site is Scarface

I disagree.

Submitted by Rachel on July 7, 2008 - 14:57.

Based on my knowledge, Republicans who are usually conservatives want LESS government involvement in the country, and liberals/democrats want more- more government control over the market, over the schools, over health care, the list goes on and on. Liberals want the government to take care of every aspect of their life, and conservatives would take care of themselves.

But that's just my observations.

  • reply

um, your observations are

Submitted by Bri's Soldier of Awesomness on July 7, 2008 - 19:25.

um, your observations are kind of wrong. That's why there's the whole "political spectrum" thing going on. That's probably a bit more in depth. "AP partner" did a good job explaining it, I think.

maybe you consider yourself to be conservative and not want government involvement, but that would probably make you more of a moderate.

Republicans (conservatives...used interchageably, I assume) usually want governmet involvement in things that will benifit their own personal interests, like tax reductions and abortion laws. Lots of laws prohibiting things, you understand. Gay marriage, immigrant laws, ect... That's government involvement. not using government taxes to have better schools.

Democrats, on the other hand, want more control with money. They don't want to be told who they can marry, or what they aren't allowed to do with their bodies. They want MONEY being more controlled in government, not their own personal freedom.

You're thinking of socialism with government involvement funding a lot of things, too.. so that's also wrong. I'd lean our liberalism towards european socialism at times, though.
That's when you'd like government involvement in funding most public activities.

The only thing I'd disagree with "AP partner" is that commnism seems more on the far left... although I'm not really an expert on Russian communism. Maybe that was more right in theory than regular communistic ideas.

Communisum

Submitted by AP Partner on July 8, 2008 - 09:59.

The reason that USSR is on that list is because sometimes if you go to far one direction then you almost loop around, in the USSR and NAZI Germany both people were controlled and the companies both were ether controlled by the government like in the USSR or reported to the Government in NAZI Germany. Communism is very different from socialism in that there is one man in control of the government and the people don't put him there.

right

republicans who want tax cuts and abortion outlawed are not asking for the government to take over these things, they're asking for new LAWS.

Laws don't let you choose

Submitted by Bri's Soldier of Awesomness on July 8, 2008 - 18:00.

Laws don't let you choose things what you want to do. they tell you what you CAN'T DO.

Think of a jail cell. You can't choose to leave a jail cell. the walls tell you that you can't leave. You can't DO activities that others have decided you shouldn't do... like leave.

If it's against the LAW to have an abortion,
that might cause a good, LAW abiding person to NOT DO IT.

that would mean they are CONTROLLING the activity to have abortions and such. they are outlawing them. Disallow. Restrict.

That means (at least by government standards) you cannot do them.

That's control. You have no governmental right to choose if there's a law. You are wrong.

Well I disagree with YOU!

Submitted by Bri's Soldier of Awesomness on July 8, 2008 - 13:52.

Well, I don't know a whole lot about republicans, but I do know that the whole liberal thing is based on the people having more control (or at least it is on some things). The whole liberal mindset is that there should be choices available. I know that was poor wording so I'll give an example with abortion: liberals want abortion to stay legal so that people are allowed the right to choose, not so they will choose it over things such as adoption. Most (if not all) people who are pro-choice would rather have people choose an alternative to abortion, or how about this great idea: don't have sex unless you want a baby (and can support it)! As with taxes and everything, I don't think that anyone want's to leave that stuff solely in the hands of the people. If most had their way, we wouldn't have taxes, and we wouldn't have roads, schools, or public transportation systems either. And as far as tax breaks go, liberals would rather have them in favor of the people that actually need them (like the poor people). Tax breaks for the rich are supposed to have a trickle-down effect (e.g. the rich people create more jobs for poor people which thus gives poor people more money, thus making them no longer poor), but since Regan introduced the idea (or someone in the Regan administration), this hasn't really worked.

It's Gomer again. One of these days I'll actually sign in, you just watch.

hmmm, I was always taught like Rachel in that Republicans were libertarians and Democrats were Authoritarians. But what would I know.

Personally, I think the idea of parties is dumb, because too often people make decisions because of their parties, but I think it should be the other way, in that the party they belong to is caused by their decisions. No one should pick a party: they should be told what party they seem to be by others that have listned to their decisions.

i agree

Submitted by AP Partner on July 8, 2008 - 10:22.

Defiantly, and some people like that. However, if you look at our schools some people just want to be part of something, so the join clubs and groups in school and as adults they join politics as one of the ways to fit in. One of the biggest reason people join is by watching the news and finding out what is going in the world and if you watch Fox it tends to have more of a republican ideals and MS NBC has more liberal ideas. So when watching the news you sometimes need to watch both because unfortunately biased still slides into the news.

Ben, I love you. This was the PERFECT way to start out your weekly political thing. Six comments already! I'm so excited!
I'm sitting in the downstairs part of this all girl college, missing boys terribly, and reading your blog and all the comments afterwards makes my heart swell. I'm so proud of this website, and I'm so glad that my friends can share into the experience.

Based on your blog, I am a moderate who has liberal tendencies. I liked how you explained that sometimes one side is so extreme it kind of loops around. That's the perfect way to explain it.

Excellent work, Ben.

Love, Bri.

Bri: yeah I do.
Scarface: Why, I thought you had a car?
