Running mates for the presidential canidates
Submitted by AP Partner on July 28, 2008 - 10:00.
Have you been watching the news lately? Have you heard about the picking of a presidential running mates? And why are they taking so long to choose one? Well a running mate is very important to a campaign because depending on who they chose can affect the campaign. Before the civil war running mates would be chosen across the north/south border. This can bring a candidate into better grips with the voters. Example, a man is doing well at getting the upper and middle classes to vote for him but the lower classes can't connect with him, so he gets a running mate that the lower class can connect more with, and therefore, more people vote for his party because of his running mate.
For example if Obama chooses Clinton as his running mate she will bring the white women that Hilary appealed to and bring Bill Clinton's great fund raising capability. So who would you chose for Obama or McCain?

Submitted by Godfather on July 28, 2008 - 12:43.I really don't care for either candidate so it really doesn't matter to me. Just as long as Obama doesn't pick Hillary I'm fine.
Yeah
Submitted by Aardvarki on July 28, 2008 - 16:13.I don't know enough about Clinton to know whether I dislike her or not, but I think that her joining Obama as a running mate could hurt the campaign. From what I understand, Bill Clinton was a good president (at least he didn't make any huge mistakes that will haunt us for generations, e.g. the Iraq war), but he made at least one personal decision that was less than commendable (and has really followed with an aura of bad reputation, both for him and, rather unfairly, his wife). But you gotta admire Hillary for not divorcing him. Till death do us part, eh?
Lets Debate a bit
Submitted by Godfather on July 28, 2008 - 16:22.I really have to disagree about admiring Hillary for staying with him. If someone does something like that, why stay with them? If your not worth being with, mine as well dump them. Why now would she stay with him? Think about it, an ex-president has a certain amount of money and power, which really helps in a campaign. It also helps the media say that once she is in the white house, she will know how things run. It doesn't seem to me like true love, just a lust for power.
I see you point
Submitted by Aardvarki on July 28, 2008 - 16:46.But I think that money is a non-issue. She would have gotten half when they divorced anyway. And staying together wouldn't have helped her current debt situation much anyway. And I think that staying with Bill Clinton harmed her campaign more than it helped it. And she was already in the White House when this whole scandal happened. I think that your whole "lust for power" conspiracy doesn't exist. Although, I was still extremely young when the whole thing happened (and you were younger), and I would hardly consider myself an expert on the issue (indeed, I know little details about it), but if you think you know more about it than I, and can present me with concrete evidence, then I'll believe you.
But...
Submitted by Godfather on July 28, 2008 - 16:55.I don't think that Bill harmed the campaign too much. Most (note that I just say most) democrats liked Bill and didn't see the cheating as something that was a big deal. Also, a divorce doesn't look like you're committed, and could have hurt her campaign worse.
I wasn't talking about democrats
Submitted by Aardvarki on July 28, 2008 - 21:52.No, it was the republicans who were turned off by Bill's action (or maybe it was just an excuse not to want to vote for Hillary). But either way, I think it is a lame reason not to want to vote/support someone. And I think what made the democrats turn away from Hillary were all of the rather stupid things she said about Obama (I don't know the specifics, I just remember her saying some pretty dumb and untrue things that made her look pretty bad).
Yep
Submitted by Godfather on July 29, 2008 - 06:40.Yeah I do agree, most people who were turned off by Clinton were Republicans, but I do know there were some democrats (not many, but a few). A lot of people were turned off her in this election I think because she would claim things that weren't true, like she said that there was sniper fire attacking her in Bosnia, when there was no gunshots fired. The people who saw that she was lying through her teeth pretty much every day wouldn't vote for her. Thats my two cents at least.
My 2 cents
Submitted by Bri on July 29, 2008 - 10:23.I think you're both arguing over something that neither of you understand. You both only know a few facts about the Clintons, which isn't helping either of your cases.
I'm not going to pretend to know everything about the Clintons, because I didn't start getting into politics until this year. Here are some things I DO know:
-Bill's administration when he was in the White House failed to refer to the mass killings in Rwanda as genocide simply because it would have hurt his campaign and he didn't want to deal with it. Later, after he finally stepped in too late, he flew there and made a little apology speech.
-Bill did lewd things with someone other than his wife. His wife did not divorce him. MoMo, you're right, if they divorced she would have gotten half of everything, and Vin, you're right, because most of their marriage seems to be for political gain. But honestly, this is none of our business, and how someone conducts her personal life should not matter when it comes to choosing a president.
-If Obama picks Hillary as a running mate, it will severely hurt his campaign. We thought they were tearing the democratic party apart when they were against each other. It's not a good mix. The people who like Obama but hate Bill will refuse to vote. Hillary has too many people against her for stupid reasons, and that would carry over to Obama and in turn hurt him.
I like how know one cares about who McCain's running mate is. I think he needs a younger person, because that's where he's losing most of his votes (from the people who would have otherwise supported him). He needs a young guy (yes, unfortunately, guy) as a running mate.
Well that's all I have to say.
trust
Submitted by Anonymous Creeper on July 29, 2008 - 17:01.I think picking a running mate is all about "trust".
Can they work with each other?
Hillary was proven that she lied during her primary campaign. How can we trust her word?
Can Obama really handle Bill in the shadows?
Hillary is perfectly qualified but many of our "stupid reasons" for not liking her as a candidate/running mate are ligit.
I always felt her candidacy was about HER not what was best for our country.
