Life fills in my veins

I’m reviewing Panic’s second album, Pretty. Odd. And I have to say, I’m disappointed. Their debut album, A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out, was incredible. Each song had it’s own personality, a good beat, interesting lyrics, and an upbeat and electric sound. Pretty. Odd., however, is much more mellow.

I’ll give them credit for trying new things, and some of the songs were pretty decent, like Nine In The Afternoon, When The Day Met The Night, and That Green Gentleman. But overall, I was looking for their previous, punk/techno/orchestra/alternative sound, and I didn’t get it.

One thing I found interesting was how the band traded instruments for some of the songs, and one or two Ryan, a guitarist, sand instead of Brendan, the regular lead singer. It was interesting, and brave, but next time I’ll be a little more wary of their music. Who knows what they’ll do next?

Sounds like: Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, The Academy Is

Best Track: When The Day Met The Night

Sorry for the late post tonight.

I don’t need to fall at your feet

So I know that everyone will be talking about this, but we didn’t have a politics blog this week so I’m doing one now.

OMG OBAMA HAS A RUNNING MATE WHEEEEE. My local newspaper dedicated the entire front page to this news, and to “top ten facts about the candidates”. From this article I learned that McCain has a stuffed dancing hamster and Obama’s high school basketball nickname was “O’bomber”. Yeah, I really needed to know that. And haven’t we been a little sensitive about Obama and his religious beliefs for the past couple months? I don’t think learning that he used to be called “O’Bomber” is the best way to get past that… Some people are a bit less open minded than we like to think about.

And the fact that McCain has a dancing hamster is just creepy. And it was NUMBER ONE on the list. Sheesh.

I’m getting pretty sick of this race. My prediction is that it will lean to McCain. I also predict that Voltaire’s reanimated corpse will make an appearance half way through. Dancing with McCain’s stuffed hamster.

…I’m afraid to go to sleep now that I have that vision in my head.

In other news, this is what happens when it’s one in the morning and one of your best friends only lives one house over…

Adventure Captain Pants and Bri. Thaaaat’s right.

Stop this train!

Cartel

My favorite new band. Well, New to me. It irks me how I haven’t heard about this band until now. I have yet to buy their first album (*edit* I bought their first album and it’s just as amazing!!), so this review is on their second, self titled one.

This is probably my favorite CD ever, because it’s so diverse and I love each song differently. Again, it’s half because of the lyrics. From Wasted, “It’s two forty five the baby takes his first breath/ the mother never knew he only had a few left”. Lose It “She’s coming back around, there she sees me, oh my God, this is who I’ve been”. If I Were To Write A Song “If I were to write a song/ that could penetrate your ears”.

That last track, If I Were To Write A Song, is nine minutes long. It made me laugh when I noticed that. The funny thing is that it’s almost like two separate songs, because half way through,  it completely rearranges the beat and background sound. I like it.

Sounds Like: All American Rejects, Boys Like Girls, Run Kid Run

Best Track: Wasted (Original mix)

It takes some bad for satisfaction

Yes, everyone, you can go yell and pound your meaty fists in anger, because this week’s music blog is about the Jonas Brothers. Get over it.

I was gonna post my Cartel CD review, but since the Jo Bros new album came out yesterday, I thought I’d do a little something for them.

I do not care if you don’t like them. I like their music, but that’s another story. I’m not writing this blog so you will go out and buy all their CDs. (but if you do, buy the new one. One of the things I love about them is that their albums get better each time another comes out. Not like Panic At The Disco… but that’s another story) I am writing this blog to tell you not to hate them, and give you reasons so you can at least respect them.

Yeah, you heard me, respect the Jo Bros, yo. (Couldn’t help myself, sorry) Here are some of the things people hate most of them:

1. They associate with Disney Channel and have made a movie with them. Uh, can you spell BRILLIANT? I mean, really, what better way to sell your music than get it promoted by Disney? They’re one of the biggest corporations in the world, and they reach kids from the age of three to teenagers (ok, some teens). Even if you don’t watch Disney, you’ve heard of JB through them somehow. Don’t make cracks at JB for doing stuff with Disney, it’s a fairly wholesome operation to belong to, and it gets the word out about them. Actually, that’s how I heard about them. I was bored and there was nothing on TV so I was watching some mindless show on Disney, when their commercials came on. One of said commercials was a music video from these extremely cute teenage boys singing a remake for “Poor, Unfortunate Souls”. I liked it so much, I looked them up, and when their first album came out, I bought it.

2. People think they’re the masculine version of Miley Cyrus. Ugh. Don’t even. For one, Miley Cyrus doesn’t even write her own songs. Maybe she writes one here or there, but for the most part, she sings other people’s words. JB? They write ALL their own music and lyrics. And they also don’t just get onstage and sing like most “boy bands”. They actually play instruments. So maybe the lead singer doesn’t generally play onstage, but like his talented brothers, he plays guitar and piano and some drums. Yes, I said TALENTED. How many people play three to five instruments, write their own music and lyrics, and can actually get somewhere with it?

3. Image. They are probably the most wholesome teenage stars out there right now, or at least tied for first. Have they taken half naked pictures in Vogue? (For the record, it wasn’t that bad. The whole mess was blown out of proportion, but whatever) Have they been caught drinking and driving? Have they been caught doing ANYTHING that would be seen as unseemly? The bigest scandal they’ve been involved in was “Is Nick Dating Miley???” I mean, really. Gotta give them some credit for that.

4. Music. If you don’t like them, remember, I don’t go yelling how YOUR bands suck. Look, music is about opinion and personal taste. I don’t care if they sound like nails on a chalboard to you. I like them. Move on. Grow up.

I’ll stop talking now, but think about that. Their new CD, A Little Bit Longer, came out yesterday, and in my opinion, it is excellent.

A little for everyone

You’re like Dirt to me now

A flower without it’s petals
A mine without it’s metals
A dog without it’s bark
A playground without the park

I don’t care if it is stupid
I know what I want
You are suffering too
We’re like dirt without a pot

It’s like a fire without the flames
Pieces without the games
A garden without it’s flowers
Superman without his powers

I don’t care if it is stupid
I know what I want
You are suffering too
We’re like dirt without a pot

We might get hurt
But at least we’d have tried
Don’t want to wonder “what if”
For the rest of my life…

I don’t care if it is stupid
I know what I want
You are suffering too
We’re like dirt without a pot

When there’s nothing left

Her eyes are black
Just like the skin above her cheek
Her skin is red
From the thirteenth scab this week
Her hands are shaking
As she cowers in her room
Her ears are ringing
But his rant is ending soon

Why do you look away?
Why does she have to pay?
She has done nothing wrong
Her head hurts from being strong
But she’s got nowhere left to go

His arm is broken
Because papa lost his job
His face is bruised
But he can not even sob
His will is taken
So he hides himself away
His head is spinning
He’s got no choice but to stay

Why do you look away?
Why does he have to pay?
He has done nothing wrong
His heart hurts from being strong
But he’s got nowhere left to go

She’s waited so long
To turn eighteen
He joined the army
So they can’t hear him scream
Why me?

Why do you look away?
Why do they have to pay?
They have done nothing wrong
Their hearts strain from being strong
But still they’re crying all alone

The Long Awaited Release Of…

BREAKING DAWN!

I’m ashamed to say it took me a week to finish it…but that was because I was gone this whole week, consequently missing my blog day…but I just got home yesterday.

This series has been a roller coaster for me…Twilight was just amazing. New Moon was just weird, Eclipse ticked me off, and Breaking Dawn was the Best. Book. Ever.
I dunno it’s a tie between that and Harry Potter for my favorite series.
Anyway.

The reason this book was so amazing was simply because Stephenie Meyer wrote everything we wanted her to. She wrote, essentially, the perfect book. It ended SO WELL. No disappointment whatsoever, everything tied up neatly, no saying “I can’t believe the author did/didn’t…”, no cliffhangers. if i could marry this book i would.

The characters are better than ever, I could actually stand Jacob this time…Meyer has a way with characters. It’s silly but she makes my stomach hurt for a long time after reading cause I wish my life was that exciting.
She just pulls you into an alternate reality for a long time until disappointment and monotony bring you back into your own life.

ennewayz. most amazing book i’ve ever read. Read it. Feel it. Love it.

Maybe you’re gonna be the one that saves me

So this summer my parents, my brother, and I have been pretty much redoing the entire house. New floors, complete paint job, new furniture, new look! I was particularly excited that finally, after thirteen years of living in this house, I was finally allowed to paint my room a color other than white. WOO! This is what I’ve done with it.

New shelf thing… and lots of new pictures! On the top, I believe the order is Liam Aiken, old soccer picture, bottle with flower, tree hugging, and me at my freshman homecoming. ORANGE WALL!! I added a couple more things since this pic was taken… a Star Wars poster, my DC group picture, and some artwork I did.

These are old shelves but now I have pictures on it! Order: First-grade-age picture with Rachel and Mariah, Spy picture of me and Rachel (6th grade), and homecoming 06 picture!

New shelf thing… with pictures from my photography class, me and Megan, and pictures from Glacier NP. Also I have a Jonas Brothers poster (sue me), a Micheal Phelps poster, Emma Watson (Hermione Granger) on the front of Parade, Shia LaBeouf as Mutt Williams poster, homecoming 07 picture, Italy calendar, Italy map, and that mask thing I made last year.

One of two bulletin boards (old). Heh. I need more. I put so much crap on them.

My bed (kind of made) and my shade and my ORANGE wall. The shade is the same color as the other wall in my room.

I have two walls orange (and that weird fifth wall that I don’t count), one teal-ish green wall, and one yellow-ish white wall. Framed pictures: 24. Unframed pictures: 19. Organizational furniture (I cound shelves): 12. Books: Not gonna count again.

Woo.

AH Lyrics

Since I’m in a hotel room right now and I have been either travelling or without sufficient computer access for the past few days, today’s (late) music blog will be a bit pathetic. I also forgot to bring my flash drive with my Nine Days CD review on it so yeah.

I just compiled some of my favorite lyrics for today. Kudos if you can identify them without looking them up, but I’ll forgive you someday if you have to Google ’em. Anyways, enjoy!

“You should never let the sun shine on tomorrow before the sun rises today”

“Hate is a strong word, but I really really really don’t like you”

“If you want better answers ask better questions”

“Shelter me oh genius words, just give me strength, to pen these things”

“I will write you a song, that’s how you’ll know that my love is still strong”

“When you’re dreaming with a broken heart, the waking up is the hardest part”

“We’ve learned to change but did we change to learn”

“OOOH THIS IS AN S-O-S!!!”

Sorry had to throw that last one in. Muahaha.

BLG Concert Blog!

SOUNDTRACK OF YOUR SUMMER

Band order:

The Maine

Metro Station

Good Charlotte

Boys Like Girls

My throat is STILL sore from screaming so much. I think there may have been a moment of insanity where I bellowed “I love you” at Boys Like Girls that didn’t really help. There will definitely be more concerts in my future.

Jeanne, a friend from Hollins who lived in the town where the concert was, my grandma, and I stood outside in the hot rainy Texas weather for a little over two hours. Yes, Texas is all you’re getting. After eating at a nearby Hard Rock Cafe and realizing it was raining too hard to go back to the hotel, there wasn’t much else for us to do. Plus, the crowd outside the theater was growing steadily and we wanted to be inside as soon as possible. A local radio station blasted music for us at a booth they set up, so the multiplying indie kids could sing along while they waited. The rain stopped and started, but for the most part pounded constantly on the pavilion that the hundreds of us stood under.

Getting inside was a flurry of security guards, pushing, shoving tickets at the checkers, and holding onto Jeanne and grandma so we wouldn’t get separated. Our seats were on the balcony above the stage and to the right (our left). I was a little disappointed we weren’t down right in front of the stage, but for my first concert, I was also a little relieved. Plus, watching the crowd was almost as fun as watching the bands, as it turned out. (Mosh pits! Crowd diving! Mosh pits!!)

We were in out seats about forty five minutes before the show started, but it passed quickly with me hyperventilating, Jeanne laughing at me, and my grandma looking anxious.

The Maine had the opening act. I hadn’t heard of them before, but found I enjoyed their music. They did a great job warming up the crowd, and even though I wasn’t standing up and dancing yet, I was already having the time of my life. Metro station came up next, with a ten minute set change in between. They didn’t talk to the crowd as much, but you could feel the energy in every song. I’d never heard of them before either, and I still wasn’t standing, but I felt the excitement growing.

We tried going downstairs to buy a concert teeshirt, but the crowd was so thick downstairs between acts that we soon gave up. There was a fifteen minute set change before Good Charlotte, so I snapped more pictures of the crowd.

As soon as GC came onto stage, I jumped out of my seat. They immediately started in on one of my favorite song’s, The Anthem. Having not know the words for the first two bands, I sand along with vigor. Unfortunately, due to my gratuitous screaming for the first two performances, I was already starting to lose my voice.

The lead singer worked the crowd brilliantly. Jeanne and I were screaming, dancing, throwing up our arms, sweating, and I was bellowing all the lyrics I knew. Other songs they played included I Don’t Wanna Be In Love, Hold On, Little Things, and Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. By the time they ran off stage, I was sweating so badly you would have thought I’d just taken a shower. A hot, bad smelling shower. But I didn’t care. I couldn’t talk much, because I wanted to save my voice for Boys Like Girls. I knew every one of their songs. I would be singing all of it. And I would be dancing and screaming like a madman.

Ok, so since this is already a really long blog, I’m gonna post about BLG tomorrow (bonus!) and post my pictures.

It’s five minutes to midnight!

I first heard about this band on a friend’s MySpace. He had a song of theirs, Thunder, on his profile, so I looked them up and have been in love ever since.

When their self titled CD came out, I bought it immediately, and was not disappointed. All of the songs put me in a different mood, and each is diverse and fresh.

On my MP3, there is one song I skip over most of the time, their slowest track, entitled Holiday. The song is alright, maybe a little slow for my taste,  but what bothers me is the lyrics. “When I was younger I used to be wild/wild as an elephant’s child” Then, “Wise as an elephant’s eyes.” What is this random fixation on elephants? I’m so confused. As a person who generally picks a song for it’s lyrics, this track will forever be under my skin.

Sounds Like: All American Rejects, Cartel, Good Charlotte, Nine Days, Run Kid Run

Best Track: Dance Hall Drug

I decided to post this one today in honor of the concert I am attending tomorrow… BOYS LIKE GIRLS SOUNDTRACK OF YOUR SUMMER TOUR!!! WOOO!!! So next week I’ll do a review on one of my favorite bands at the first concert I have ever attended. So stay tuned!
