You had to know this was coming. I mean, there’s really no way to get around it. As with most writers, I was first a reader. I couldn’t just give that up after being marooned. And the first book I really fell in love with was Harry Potter.
For my third item, I would bring along Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the final installment in the revolutionary series that forever changed the course of my life. The only reason I wouldn’t bring the entire series is because I already cheated with my pens-and-notebook loophole to the whole “seven items” allotment.
Why not The Last Days of Summer? I do talk about it enough, and it is my favorite book of all time. I compiled all the blogs I’ve written about it here. But I couldn’t bring it to the planet.
TLDOS is a fantastic book, but it’s a sad one as well. I cry every single time I read it. And that’s not the kind of book I want to be stuck with for the rest of my life. I’ll be depressed enough without human contact, I don’t need that book to make things more depressing.
Harry Potter 7 is the best choice for my one chosen book for several reasons.
1. Although it does make me cry sometimes, it’s a happy crying. J.K. Rowling is a genius, and the ending of that book is one of the best I’ve ever read, especially after such a fantastic series.
2. As of right now, I’ve only read it four times, which if you take into account the amount of times I’ve read the other books is nothing.
3. I’m going to be crazy bored the majority of the time, so an adventure book is just what I need. The old adrenaline needs to get pumping sometimes.
4. The Harry Potter books will forever remind me of Rachel, who I will miss unbelievably.
You might be catching onto a theme with these items. Pasta salad reminds me of Bart. Harry Potter reminds me of Rachel. Who will be tomorrow?? (If you can’t guess, then you clearly haven’t been reading my blogs)
Of course, Harry Potter reminds me of a lot more people than just Rachel. It reminds me of my parents, who read the first four books aloud to my brother and I. It reminds me of my third grade teacher, who introduced me to the books. It reminds me of Cody and Zach and Craig and everyone I’ve ever shared a nerdy HP moment with. And if I’m going to be alone for the rest of my life, I want to be able to remember as many people as possible.
Memory: Zach trying to use “black magic” against us. It wouldn’t work if we were wearing metal.
I’m also trying to pace myself with HP 7 because since there’s no more harry potter, one has to drag the enjoyment out as long as possible. It’s SUCH a satisfying book, and I commend your choice 🙂
Could you please do a blog on the whole Twilight vs. Harry Potter debacle? For example the popularity of the movies vs the books etc.
Anonymous: Yes! Keep checking back throughout the weekend to see it.
