First Day

Today was the first day of baseball tryouts for school ball!!! It was quite fun, a little on the chilly side though, it was extremely windy. I had a ton of fun though, baseball is a really chillaxed sport.

So we stretched, did some form running, threw, did a couple running tests (which I did beautifully in), did some intense running, then took batting practice. It was pretty exhausting but I loved it, I’ve been waiting all year.

In other news, Nate Robinson brought out the kryptonite and defeated Dwight Howard (Superman) in the Slam Dunk contest. I wanted Superman to win, however Nate Robinson won 52% to 48% in the fan voting. Well that’s about it for now, I’d better get to studying.

A-Rod

So my second favorite baseball player admitted to using steroids yesterday… shoot. If you’ve never heard of Alex Rodriguez, he’s widely considered the most talented player in all of baseball, not to mention the highest paid position player.

He publicly apologized unlike nearly everyone else, and takes all the blame for his actions. He claims to have been clean since 2004, which I choose to believe. However, no one seems to agree on whether to trust him or not. In an interview in 2007 he sternly renounced using any kind of performance enhancing drug, and now he admits to using them…

His reasons for taking the drugs as well as lying are admittedly understandable in my eyes, however there are no excuses for doing such a thing. He has all the talent in the world and is easily on pace to break the Home Run record and numerous others, which he probably would be in line to break even if he hadn’t taken the drugs, he’s that good. Also, his stats don’t seem to peak at any time period, so it’s hard to be sure how much steroids could really have helped him. A-Rod had it paved, but the pressure to take performance enhancing drugs and to be the greatest ever can sometimes be too much.

I acknowledge Alex for at least seemingly being truthful, good luck to him in the future.

Scarface’s Top 5 Sport Movies

So this is the second of two segments on sport films, the inaugural one from the well known movie lover we call Godfather. Astounding how different choices are really… And let me remind you, I’m picking my favorites entertainment wise, he did his on content. That’s the whole point of this, we’re analyzing the difference between different opinions of a ‘good’ movie. So let’s get started shall we?!?!

5. : Fever Pitch

This is relatively a more recent movie, however it is great because unlike most movies, it depicts the life of a die hard fan of a game. It is in fact a baseball movie, and it follows the life of a Red Sox fan the year they broke the famed “Curse of the Bambino.” The acting is astounding and all the characters fit their role to perfection I believe. It’s also a love story, so that makes it good as well. Go Sox!!!

4. : The Longest Yard(s)

If you see one, I recommend you see the other. Because people tend to like the one they see first, I honestly don’t know which one is better, they’re actually quite different movies. They aren’t works of art in any sense, the plot lines are pretty general, but they are very entertaining and in my opinion great movies to enjoy.

3. : Field of Dreams

This movie is less action based than most, but is the story of a man who tears down his cornfields in order to make a baseball field after seeing Shoeless Joe Jackson on his farm. It is a slightly religious and moving adventure, so I wouldn’t recommend it to those of you that like testosterone based movies. However, it most definitely IS a work of art and deserves credit for it.

2. : Love and Basketball

This until recently was my all time favorite flick, but I still love it. It follows a boy and a girl, and their passion for basketball and each other, from a young age and through college. It’s very well written I’d say because of how honestly it portrays some of the issues present in the movie itself. I didn’t expect it to turn out the way it did either, but I liked that. I forever loved basketball after watching this movie.

1. : Bull Durham

If I ever saw a baseball movie to top this I’d be beyond surprised. More of an adult film, it is just flawless in so many ways. The story is of a baseball groupie who finds herself torn between a young and crazy upcoming pitcher, and ‘Crash,’ the veteran catcher in charge of grooming him into a future star. I bow down to this movie.

Well as you can see that was a lot different than dear Godfathers, but that’s all I have to say.

This is a few hours early, but whatever

I really hate spending a lot of money at once, you know? You just save up forever and you spend a ton of it in just a few hours. Doesn’t that bother anyone else? I know that I’m gonna like what I’m buying and it’s worth it, but it’s just so much money.

Anyway, I bought a whole new set of golf clubs today, and a separate kick-butt putter, it’s sick. Now I’ll be the first to tell you, that is not a cheap sport. I love it though, it’s just so relaxing. But all those new clubs cost hundreds of dollars that I had saved up, they cost so much. You know what though, I definitely think it was a good purchase. Know why? It’s because they’re something that I’m going to use and use and something I’m really going to be able to enjoy for a long time. It’s definitely best to buy something that’s going to give you satisfaction for a longer period of time, then they just pay for themselves.

Well I gotta get to practicin’ with my new putter and gettin’ my game on, so I’ll catch y’all later.

What?

I have two different baseball practices today so I’ll be brief.

You know what I hate about when you follow crowds? I was hitting with a metal bat, and everyone else on the team was hitting with wood, which is better for telling you if you’re swinging good. So it annoyed the heck out of me and I ordered a fresh new wood, which I do love. But the first day I went to preseason practice (today), everyone switched to metal because coach was there…

Following the crowd is soooooooo stupid………..

We’re talkin’ about playoffs?!?!

Wow. You know what I hate the most about the NFL? Overtime. The first team to score wins, and the first team to get the ball is decided on a COIN FLIP!!! The Chargers and Colts playoff game just went into overtime, and the Chargers got the ball first. They drove the ball down the field and won the game, all the while the MVP of the league, Peyton Manning (the Colts’ quarterback), watched from the sidelines with nothing to possibly do to stop them. And you’re telling me that’s fair?

College is fair, where each team gets the ball and a chance to score. The game isn’t decided on a 50-50 coin toss.

Can I get an amen?

I honestly have some of the best bad luck sometimes…

So it’s my birthday in a few days, and my dad bought some tickets to an NFL game for me and him and my grandpa and my big bro. I get to take a big crew somewhere fun every year as my birthday present, everyone just uses me as an excuse to go fun places and not get me a real b-day present.

Since we spend X-mas in So. Cal. every year, my dad bought tickets to the Broncos vs. Chargers game, which as you probably don’t know is a HEATED rivalry game. Just a few weeks ago it looked as if the game would mean nothing, the Broncos were up 2 games with 3 to go. All that needed to happen was for the Broncos to win one out of two, or the Chargers to lose out of two, and the Broncos would clinch. By a few crazy occurences that make me too angry to write about, the Chargers pulled off two very close games and the Donkos fell twice.

You’re probably lost, or you probably stopped reading this already, so I’m probably just talking to myself; but what this means is that the Broncos are 8-7, and the Chargers are 7-8 with the tie breaker. So the Broncos and the Chargers face off this Sunday, and whoever wins earns a playoff spot and will host a game to Indianapolis. This is what they call a “play-in” game, which means you have to play to get into the playoffs. This is just like a playoff game because the loser has to pack their bags and head home ’til next season.

To show you the importance of the game, the NFL pushed it from its regular time to the night game, which means it will be nationally televised, and I’m gonna be there!!! The adrenaline throughout Qualcom is gonna be absolutely NUTS, and the tickets are worth about 5 times as much as they were when we got them because of the importance of the game. This is one of the biggest games in either team’s recent history, and I hope my team wins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What up?

One of the stupidest thing I can think of in sports is the way college football has their postseason… wow it’s bad.

So after the season ends, experts decide who are the best teams and who deserves to have the chance to play in the featured games. It is stupid as heck. With only an 11 or so game season, it is IMPOSSIBLE to tell which teams are the very best. So a team that could be the best team in the country, just by voting, not even get a chance to play for the national championship, it just makes no sense. The teams don’t even have even schedules, a 2 loss team in a very tough division could be much much much better than an undefeated team from a weak division. Doesn’t a normal tournament sound like the perfect way to settle all these problems? Then wouldn’t everyone get the chance to play into the championship game?

Let me just give you the low down on this year’s championship game BS. So 4 teams from the roughest divisions across the US all have 1 loss. Coincidentally, two of them played each other, and the other two also played each other. So here’s what happened.

Florida (one loss) played Alabama(no losses). Florida won, and automatically overtook them. Florida will be in the championship game, seemingly because Florida won the head to head match up.

Oklahoma played Texas. Texas beat Oklahoma, so each have one loss. However, Oklahoma will be in the championship game instead of Texas…

So Florida is better than Alabama because they beat Alabama; but Oklahoma is better than Texas even though they were beaten by Texas. What the heck?

Dude, spray those things with Windex

So one of the things I’ve recently learned while taking baseball lessons with my hitting coach is really the secret to success. Relaxation.

A lot of times you’re just struggling, desperately, and you can’t find a way to dig out of your hole. So you try harder and harder, putting all your aggression into it. And it’s normally to no avail.

But what people don’t realize is that aggression in many cases is the problem. Your muscles get tense and you just try and force things to happen. What you need to do is step back and just breathe. Take all the time you need, and refocus that energy to what is gonna fix your problem. Then just relax, go with the flow. Give yourself some flexibility and don’t get so tense. Then you can actually figure out what’s wrong and fix it, instead of maybe succeeding a couple times on pure luck.

Everything’s in your head most of the time, it’s your challenge to control it.

Girls…

I’d just like to say somethin real quick, I don’t think it needs much of an explanation.

First impressions are sooooooo important.

And today at baseball practice I tore the cover off the ball, coach was impressed.

I guarantee he’ll remember it too.

First impressions can make all the difference.
