It’s no secret that I love the band Cartel. I discovered them in my early days of Pandora, when they popped up in my Boys Like Girls station. I actually wrote a review for their second album back in 2008 (almost exactly two years ago… seriously I posted it in April.). But today, I wanted to go through, song by song, their latest album, Cycles, which is, in my opinion, their best work yet.
Let’s Go: This is my new pump up song. An upbeat tempo with those familiar pop-punk undertones.
The Perfect Mistake: As with most albums, there’s always a few songs that kind of blend together, since they’re not really significant. This is one of them, although I like it a lot.
Faster Ride: I like the chorus of this song. “You just want to take a faster ride, lower lows, higher highs.” Another good upbeat song.
Deep South: This song connected with me immediately, and it was my first favorite. I love the way it sounds, especially near the bridge when a line that they repeat often is weirdly auto-tuned. I wait for that moment every time I listen to this song.
Only You: Their slow song of the album. Incredibly romantic and beautiful. I’d fall in love with them too.
It Still Remains: Another one of the blended songs. Good, but forgettable.
27 Steps: For some reason, I just really like this song, and I don’t know why.
See Me Now: The lyrics of this song kind of annoy me, and I’m not really sure for the reason. It just seems a bit juvenile.
Typical: This song used to blend for me, but I’m starting to get into it. The beginning is ACE!
Conventional Friend: Good, but again, the lyrics are kind of simple.
Retrograde: This is a slow-er song, but I’d still consider it upbeat. I like it because I like the word “retrograde”.
