I’ve had a fairly constant group of female friends since halfway through eighth grade. The only ones who I still consider part of the group, however, are Kelli, Mia, and Danika. And the people I’ve been closest to have been Kelli and Mia, both of whom I’ve already talked about in this forum. But I think the reason for that is because they talk so much.
Danika has never really talked at all. The only time I remember exchanging words with her was in 8th grade history where we sat next to each other and she pointed out the under-desk-pleasure-game two other students were playing while our phenomenally boring teacher was lecturing. I’m not going to go into details.
But over the years, Danika has really started to break out of her shell, and it’s been great finally getting to know her. She still doesn’t say much, but when she does talk, it’s something really interesting or intelligent. She’s like that really quiet character in the movies who doesn’t say a word until the climax, when she says something really profound that gives all the talkative idiots epiphanies. That is how it is every time Danika opens her mouth. Imagine a speech bubble going “PROFOUND!”
Being a narcissist and all, I like to talk a lot. But one thing I’ve started to realize over the years is that I should probably learn to shut up sometimes. And I’m not being facetious; Danika has truly been an inspiration in this respect.
I want to be Danika when I grow up.
