Today is the day for writing about someone important in my life. This isn’t something I have to wait the rest of the day to write, so I’m at school right now.
The logical person to kick off this experiment with is my best friend, Rachel. I met Rachel in kindergarten when she moved in down the street from my grandma. “Look, grandma, it’s the new girl!” I called excitedly, pointing at the family taking things out of the back of a large van.
Ever since then, we’ve been near inseparable. Although we haven’t gone to the same school since fifth grade, email, instant messaging, sleepovers, and text messages have kept us just as close.
Rachel was there during both (or all three, depending on your definition) of my breakups. When I broke up with my first boyfriend, Mike, over MySpace IM (not my fault, he brought it upon himself), I was talking to her at the exact same time on Yahoo IM. When I broke up with my second boyfriend, Cody, over the phone (I’m really a horrible person, I know.), she was in the same room. It was tough on me both times, and she was right there to help me get back on my feet. I tell her everything, confide in her all the time, and I extend the favor back to her.
Rachel sees things the way I see them, is a creative mind like me, and dislikes crowds like me. We are almost the same person in two different bodies, which is exactly what you should look for in a best friend, right? Every time I think of badgering my parents again about moving from Seattle when I was three, I stop. If I had never moved here, I would have never met Rachel. I shudder to think what kind of life that would have been.
So, thank you, Rachel, for always putting up with me, listening to me, giving me social and writing advice, and just being there. Considering yourself my friend. We’ll get to Europe together one day, I promise.
Hey Bri. You might not remember me, but last summer I was in your Creative Writing class at Hollinsummer. I just wanted to tell you that I think you are amazing and incredibly brave for undertaking 365 days of discovering yourself. Good luck with everything, and I hope we encounter each other in the future.
