[Day 235] Eugenia part 9

Read part 8 here!

My refusal to believe in Asher’s known erratic behavior set up his betrayal nicely for the books. Just three weeks later, Asher had gone to take a bath and had not returned. We went to look for him after two hours of no word, but he wasn’t at the lake. Gruber knew that he’d gone back to society, and although he wasn’t particularly upset, he sat with me as I cried, trying to comfort me. But my tears hadn’t even dried when four men came to collect us, with Asher’s directions.

We were thrown into the same cell with Asher that night, awaiting our upcoming extermination.

“I’m sorry.” he told us, head bent. “It was the right thing to do.”

I couldn’t bring myself to speak, but Gruber had been holding something back for a while.

“You selfish little brat.” He stated calmly, staring at the boy. “I couldn’t care less about your decision to let them exterminate you. To be honest, it’s a bit of a relief. You’re too loud, you snore, and you complain too much. But how dare you drag us down with you. How dare you put us in danger again? That wasn’t your place. That wasn’t your choice. So excuse me if I don’t accept your apology.”

“I’m sorry you feel that way, but-”

“Asher. Shut the hell up.” I snapped at him, huddling into Gruber. There was a draft, and the cell was already cold.

Draping his arm around me, Gruber patted my shoulder. “Atta girl.”
