[Day 91] Love’s in my heart like a bomb

I went back to my old elementary school today, to volunteer with a fifth grader avidly interested in technology. Liking to think myself as a technology buff, I was quite excited to pass on my knowledge to the younger generation. I felt like I was pretty hot stuff.

Then I met Charlie, the boy I was supposed to mentor. He’s just as tall -almost taller- than me, already knows how to animate and the basics of creating and designing video games, and has plans to save money for programs and technology I’ve never even heard of. He also has aspirations of being a YouTube partner and selling 3D video games he creates with his friends on ebay.

Who is this kid??

As… heartbroken as I was over practically becoming the student of a ten year old, it didn’t ruin my mood completely. Being back in my old school was a kick. I hadn’t been inside in at least five years. “Wow.” I told Charlie as we entered the library together. “I feel so old.”

Everything was miniature, from the chairs to the stacks of books I used to think towered over everything. All the counters were… well… my size, but if I was the height of a normal human being, they would have been tiny. I just couldn’t believe how much things had changed… but also how everything had stayed the same.

One big change I’d been noticing from driving by now and then was the fences. When I went to school there, fences were few and far between. Now, every open space was caged in like a zoo, which depressed me a little bit.

But then I remembered all the great times I’d had at that school. And how even now, even seven years later, I still wish I went there. It was a simpler time, a happier time.

…oh. And my admissions counselor from Pacific called.

Accepted.

  1. Congratulations on your acceptance to Pacific! I love going to my old elementary school and well i guess any elementary in general. The halls seem so small and yet in all my memories they were so much larger than me. It is especially fun to go play with the Jazz Band at elementaries. When I was in elementary the best part of the year was the assemblies where we would watch the high school one act plays or listen to the band. Its nice to experience the other side of it and still feel the same simple joy of listening (or playing) music.

  2. Hey BRI!!!! Wow you sure did change your site alot. I was bored, thought i’d check it out. Looks like things are going well for you. I am glad to hear about your acceptance aswell. Although I have absolutely no idea were that is at you should let me know. As fortunate as you are to go back to your old schools…I have just witnessed the destruction of my childhood school grounds. Actually all of them. All the school districts in ohio have built new…and demolished old. Owe well. Text me or call me. Happy thanks giving and Merry Christmas. Oh yea….Happy Brithday to me and to you 😉 even though thats forever away. You best buddy Mike

What's up, my dudes?
