[Day 97] Raise your hopeful voice

Before this year, I never studied. Literally. Never. Not for quizzes, not for tests, not for anything. Sure, there might be some cramming immediately before the test (and when I say immediately, I mean like five minutes before the bell rings), but no studying. I always thought I didn’t need it.

Well, I was wrong. Lately, all I freaking DO is study, and agonize over debate, and blog, and complete monotonous homework. And also, I’ve discovered the joy of study groups. One to three other suffering individuals that are just as ready to get out of this town as I am.

Tonight, I got together with my friend Chad and my mild acquaintance James to study for AP Gov at Chad’s house. It was dark by the time I pulled up to the house, and I ended up staying two and a half hours. Surprisingly, as much as we lamented being forced to study what we hadn’t been taught (cough insert gov teacher anger here cough), I had fun. Nerdy boys make the world go round.

  1. Someone once told me that you have to see material seven times before you really know it or before you can memorize it. Presumably in a good class the teacher would teach the material once through notes and once through a project or paper or homework and then you would see it another time in reading. The last four times would be covered through studying. I do not think I have ever studied anything four times in my life after the first three encounters (except for maybe for the AP gov and calc tests) Usually I am lucky if I see the material twice before I test on it. And as a class us IB kids can be even worse. We may all stay up finishing the essay for one class or simply doing nothing and then go in blind to a test in another class the next day. And then other days we will study for one test for hours. I guess we are extreme in both cases.

What's up, my dudes?
