Today’s been another busy day- photography, digital imaging, and creative nonfiction all before 2pm, then a quick Cooking with Gandalf meeting, now a homework session at Maggies, then I have my tutoring class, then debate practice at 6pm, then a slam poetry workshop at 8pm. But I promise this isn’t another one of those posts.
This is a persona poem I wrote for my poetry class, from the perspective of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Alongside it are some of my favorite pictures I’ve taken so far this semester. Enjoy!
Hi,
I’m Buffy
and I’m a vampire pyre
burned at the stake –
my mortal love,
staked against their long-quiet hearts.
I like my men
dark
and psychopathic.
If there isn’t a hint of murder,
then what’s the big?
Humans are so yester –
give me vamped-out smoochies any day.
dark as he tried to be,
in all his kitteny alive-ness
could never
be more than a pathetic imitation.
I can tell when it’s real.
I have died and been revived,
Died again and been resurrected,
known the true and total happiness of
paradise.
and the deepest, darkened depths of
horror.
Keep your beating hearts at bay
I’m dangerous
even from a distance.
Didn’t you hear?
Destruco-Girl
Man-eater,
the metaphor to my lovers’ reality.
I have slain beasts like them,
been a beast like them
but I cannot still this beating heart
like my undead lovers’.
human.
But I am not a demon.
Cannot be happy with a man,
cannot be happy with a monster.
So who the Hellmouth am I?
There are times I can deal,
no wigging necessary,
because I know I’m the girl
standing between you
and yet another apocalypse.
didja?
People think I’m just a dumb blonde
the first to the slaughter in a horror movie
ignoring the obvi-risks
of loving the undead
but what they don’t understand is that the only way for me to feel alive
is to be with someone who isn’t.
