I’m a couple days late to the party as far as posting this goes, but my little brother was visiting and I had other things to do. I think at least once a month I’m going to check in via this blog about where I am with each of these goals, because I’m an adult and I need to start following through with stuff, especially in terms of my health.
1. Order in less than three times per week. I’ve gotten into the habit of not cooking, partially because I don’t know my roommates well enough to cook WITH them (a la Cooking with Gandalf, etc), I don’t have enough space in our shared kitchen to store things TO cook, and I’m not really a fan of spending time with some of the people in my apartment and thus don’t go out into the kitchen unless I absolutely have to. However. My health and my wallet need to come first, and so I’m going to make a concerted effort to get over myself and get back in the kitchen.
2. Two meals a week have to be a salad. Despite how much more I’m walking now that I’m in NYC, my eating habits have, if anything, gotten worse. That’s not ok. As mentioned above, I am an adult. I should probably start to eat like one.
3. Post a YouTube video once every two weeks. As busy as I am, I really do miss posting videos and talking about stuff, and this schedule is less stressful than my old once/twice a week schedule, so I’m hoping this year it sticks. It’s really not too much to ask of myself, I don’t think.
4. Post a blog every other week. Same as above. WordPress compiled my “year of blogging” for 2014 and it really put into perspective how little I utilized this space. That sucks, because I love blogging and I love this website. So you should be getting a blog from me every two weeks, come hell or high water, because I really don’t have an excuse.
5. Draft Burden of Proof season 1 by next January. Burden of Proof is the working title for the TV pilot I want to use as my senior project for grad school. It’s meant to be a dramedy about high school speech and debate (one trick pony, I am). When I have more solidified I’ll talk about it more, but yeah, I want a draft of the first season, or at least a crazy-detailed outline, by the beginning of 2016.
6. Film at least 1 episode of Brains. Brains is the zombie webseries I’m writing. Once I go through more edits (and it needs them- the tone is all over the place), I want to actually produce at LEAST one episode. Because why not?
7. Figure out a battle plan for SLJ rewrites. If you’ll remember, the Secret Life of Jane was my undergraduate senior thesis. As I worked on it throughout the year and since graduation, I came to realize that as much as I’m proud of it, it’s too close to real events to be commercially viable, so I need to do some heavy plot restructuring in order for it to not come across as a personal attack/burn book. I’m not giving up on the project, just restructuring it. By this time next year, I’ll know how I’m going to do that.
8. Complete draft of The Toast movie. The Toast is the short story I read from for baccalaureate, and also the short story that got me into grad school. But as a literary magazine editor told me when I tried to submit it for publication, it’s a story that feels like the beginning of something much longer, and as one of the professors in my new program told me, it could easily be adapted into a movie. So that’s what I’m gonna do. I’m gonna write a movie.
9. Keep bedroom cleaner. My room is too small for me to be gross, and also I am an adult.
10. Visit both Oregon and Colorado. Self explanatory. I have people and places I miss in both of these states and at some point this year I really need to go back to them.
So those are my goals for this year. What are yours?
