In Defense of Bella

Note from 2020: I won’t be editing this post but since it’s been getting a handful of views recently, please do keep in mind it was posted in 2010. I was 18 years old. I do not care about your opinions on Twilight and I barely care about my own. This lives on as an archive, not as a stated continued opinion or interest. If you want to know what my current interests are, check out my portfolio here.

A few months ago, I wrote a post in defense of Twilight. Then I made a video about it. And on that video, I got a comment from a friend of mine regarding my lack of depth on my analysis. She went on to say “I dislike Twilight because of the inappropriate themes it is teaching my younger sister: a teenage girl’s [extreme] reliance on a male figure and willingness to do anything for that male (feeling of impending death without that male present), flippancy of pregnancy, etc.”

[Day 331] Books that changed my life week 7: Strega Nona

A lot of you are probably not familiar with the Strega Nona books. They are picture books for kids written and illustrated by Tomie dePaola which have very strong Italian tones. That’s probably why most of you haven’t heard of them; my family, or at least my dad’s side of the family, is very very proud and sorta obsessed with their Italian roots. [Day 329] Books that changed my life: The Stranger

My book snob readers will rejoice: my first mention of classic literature. Foreign classic literature, to boot. Albert Camus is a much more “respectable” and “well known” writer than, say, Tamora Pierce.* So I hope that this post, in part, makes up for my defense of Twilight last Wednesday. Continue reading “[Day 329] Books that changed my life: The Stranger”

[Day 328] Books that changed my life week 4: Nancy Drew

I know I made a jab at the Hardy Boys last week, and I can’t reasonably say that the Nancy Drew series was much better written. But this isn’t “books with the bestest ever writing that every critic can accept and fall in love with” week. It’s “books that changed my life” week, which, while it isn’t mutually exclusive, doesn’t have to fall into that category. Continue reading “[Day 328] Books that changed my life week 4: Nancy Drew”

[Day 326] Books that changed my life week 2: Alanna the Lioness

I don’t know how many of you are familiar with Tamora Pierce, so here’s a rundown: she’s a young adult fantasy novelist who specializes in stories about young women overcoming an oppressively masculine time period as knights. It’s like nerdy feminism. I remember buying the first book in the Alanna the Lioness series in Denver. I wasn’t sure if I’d like it, but it looked interesting, so I spent the entire day finishing it. Once I finished it, I shut the book, looked at it on my bed, picked it up again, and read it all over again. Continue reading “[Day 326] Books that changed my life week 2: Alanna the Lioness”

[Day 325] Books that changed my life week 1: Harry Potter

I’m sorry. It’s been kind of a Harry Potter leaning couple of weeks. I dunno what it is; maybe I’m super psyched for the new movie, or maybe I’d just forgotten how much I love the books. But either way, it wouldn’t seem right to have a whole week about books that changed my life and not include J.K Rowlings’ masterpieces. [Bri 2.0 BONUS!] Harry Potter vs. Twilight

A few days ago, after my Marooned Week blog about Harry Potter, an anonymous commenter requested that I spend some time discussing the Harry Potter/Twilight controversy. “Could you please do a blog on the whole Twilight vs. Harry Potter debacle? For example the popularity of the movies vs the books etc.” Continue reading “[Bri 2.0 BONUS!] Harry Potter vs. Twilight”
