Almost a week in! Today is my day for writing something about my past.
“Mom, dad, I don’t want to be a girl anymore,†I inform my parents one day after school.
“Is that so?†My dad asks, hanging up my coat for me.
“Yes. From now on, my name is Mack.â€
“Why Mack?â€
“It’s a boy’s name.â€
“Oh. Right.â€
“Why the sudden gender change?†asked my mother, reading in her blue recliner.
“Boys have all the fun.†I slump into a chair at the dinner table. “They run around and play tag and do cool stuff. Girls just stand around talking and doing string things. That’s boring.â€
“String things?â€
“Like cat’s cradle. Anyways, the boys would let me be on their team during boys vs. girls if I was one of them. They’re cooler than girls too. Rex is giving me boy lessons tomorrow.â€
“Interesting.†My dad said, frowning slightly. Looking back, I realize that there wasn’t much else he could say. His second grade daughter was well on her way to becoming his second grade son, and her argument was irrefutable.
