Fall 2012: Classes and Expectations

Remember that time I wrote a blog at the beginning and end of last semester, talking about my expectations and final thoughts on my classes? That was cool. I liked that. So I’m gonna do it again, since tomorrow I leave Colorado again for my junior year of college!

Class #1: 8:00am-10:20am Photography 1 (M-W)

Well, I can tell you right now, I’m not going to be a happy camper in the morning. I know I used to get up at 5:15am during high school, but these days, anything earlier than 9am seems just cruel. That said, I’m really looking forward to this class. It’s highly requested, so it’s taken me two years to finally get into it, and finally I get my first official instruction! With my grandfather’s old DSLR at my side, I expect to thoroughly enjoy this class, even if it’s timing is cruel and unusual. However, the class is only half a semester, so after October I can sleep till 1pm!

Class #2: 10:20am-12:50pm Intro to Digital Imaging (M-W)

This is my first class I’m knowingly taking for my integrated media minor, which should be fun! This class also ends in October, but everything about it sounds like what I want to do with my life if the whole writing thing doesn’t pan out. We’ll see.

Class #3: 1:00pm-2:05pm Advanced Creative Nonfiction (M-W-F)

I’m half happily anticipating, half dreading this class. I ended up liking the intro class a lot more than I thought I would, but as far as I understand, we’ll be working towards a long-form creative nonfiction piece, and I just don’t know if I’m cut out for it. Plus, our textbook is In Cold Blood by Truman Capote. I’m about halfway through and I wish Capote would just GET TO THE POINT ALREADY. It’s like he’s using every single bit of every single interview he ever did with the subjects. IT IS NOT ALL INTERESTING, LET ME TELL YOU.

Class #4: 4:45pm-5:30pm Tutoring in Writing Skills (M only)

This is a required class for my work study tutoring position. I’ll be working at the writing resource center (for $$!) helping other students with editing essays, etc. I doubt it’ll be too difficult.

Class #5: 1:00pm-1:45pm Weight Training (T-TH)

I had some extra room in my schedule, plus I haven’t taken an exercise class in like four years, and I remember really enjoying weight training back in the day. I am really dedicated to getting back in shape this year, so this class will hopefully help. Ellen, if you’re reading this, I promise to go to Zumba with you this year. And we should get back to learning the Party Rock Anthem dance!!

Class #6: 2:45pm-4:20pm Intro to Writing Poetry (T-TH)

Unlike Studies in Poetry from last year (Professor, you know who you are, you can go to hell), I’m really looking forward to this class. Mostly, it’s because the Professor-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named is on sabbatical and my favorite professor is taking over this class. You all probably know how much I love writing/performing slam poetry, so hopefully some formal instruction will take my work to the next level. Really, with this professor, you can’t go wrong.

Class #7: 6:00pm- 9:20pm Atwood and Gaiman (W only)

This is my first upper level lit class, which is required for my creative writing major, and I lucked out. I basically get to spend the whole semester with one of my other favorite professors reading Neil Gaiman and Margaret Atwood books. What could be better than that?? I’m anticipating a lot of essays, because this professor REALLY likes assigning them, but I’ll live.

Will my expectations hold up? You’ll see in a couple months! Oh, and did I mention that I GET TO GO BACK TO OREGON TOMORROW!!!!!

What's up, my dudes?
