Firsts and nifty things

Remember when people used to use Facebook like it was MySpace, and filled out endless questionnaires filled with completely inconsequential answers that only serve to fuel our collective cultural narcissism? Well today I decided to continue that fuel and update some of my old answers, because I haven’t blogged in a while and this seems fun.

My old answers will be in italics (I did two surveys).

Firsts (I’m bored)

Originally posted February of 2009 (I would have been 17)

1. Who was your FIRST prom date?
Never gone to prom.

My first (and only) prom date was one Chad Hotimsky. He asked me via text while I was high on painkillers from my wisdom teeth surgery, watching Revolutionary Road. We had a lot of fun, went with a big group of friends, and had crazy dance battles.

2. Do you still talk to your FIRST love?
I’m on the fence about who my first love was. The jury’s still out.

Against my better judgement, I have to say that my first “real” love was Sean, that guy I met on Facebook. Occasionally I do still here from him, and usually it’s him IMing me about how he’s still very sorry for the way he treated me, which is nice, but dude. It’s been like five years. It’s fine.

3. What was your FIRST time you drove like?
I drove home from the DMV with my mom in our very large VW camper van. On narrow streets. Scary as crap.

I guess the answer is still the same? The first time I drove sans parents was with my little brother. I took him to Burger King.

4. What was your FIRST job?
Technically, babysitting, but then I was a volleyball coach for little kids.

My first job in college was a photographer/videographer for the theater and dance department, my first summer job was a camp counselor for a sports day camp, and my first job post-college is a barista at a cool place called FIKA.

5. What was your FIRST car?
The first car I got to drive (and still drive) is a 1999 Ford Ranger that right now is making a noise like two sharp metal objects are grating against each other. Lovely.

Aw, my truck. My first car that was officially mine was a 2000 Subaru Forester, which was a gift from my grandparents and was basically the best car ever. Unfortunately, I had to leave him in Colorado since New York City isn’t very car-friendly.

6. Who was the FIRST person to text you today?
It should have been Bart (coward), but it was my grandma saying happy v-day.

I don’t know why I was calling Bart a coward on this particular occasion (though I’m sure at the time I felt very strongly about it). The first person to text me today was my mom, after I texted her happy birthday.

7. Who is the FIRST person you thought of this morning?
Jason Mraz. No joke.

Dude I don’t know. Quinn, probably? Or my mom, as it was her birthday.

8. Who was your FIRST grade teacher?
Ms. Paison. Everyone else hated her. I liked her. Screw you guys.

Same answer?

9. Where did you go on your FIRST ride on an airplane?
Heck if I know.

I think it was to my uncle’s wedding, if I’m remembering the story correctly.

10. Who was your FIRST best friend & do you still talk?
I’m not really sure who my first best friend was. I guess you could say Anna or Rebecca but they didn’t last very long. Rachel is probably the first person I actually considered my best friend, and yeah, we still talk. I can’t believe how well we’ve kept in touch.

The answer is definitely Rachel, and the other answer is yes. Though I unsuccessfully convinced her to move to New York with me, we talk a lot and I miss her a whole bunch.

11. Where was your FIRST sleep over?
It was probably in Seattle, so I dunno.

Same?

12. Who was the FIRST person you talked to today?
My mom.

Aw, the answer is the same! She’s actually in Portland right now for work, and we talked on the phone for a bit while she drove from the airport. As for the first person I talked to in person, it was either my roommate Mary-Angela or the girl (Becky, I think?) I met briefly by the laundry machines in my apartment complex.

13. Whose wedding were you in the FIRST time?
Never been to a wedding.

Well, that’s not technically true 2009 Bri, but as far as weddings you remembered I guess it was. The first wedding I remember attending was my friend Brittany’s, this last December. It was a lovely, if very religious, ceremony, and her new hubby seems cool.

14. What was the FIRST thing you did this morning?
5 Tibetan Rites. Jason Mraz does them, and I tried them this morning. For someone as out of shape as me, they were HARD. But Jason is gonna get me into shape.

WOW, 17-year-old me. Just… wow. I think the first thing I did was text my mom happy birthday, followed by checking my email/Facebook on my phone. Just like every morning.

15. What was the FIRST concert you ever went to?
Boys Like Girls, Soundtrack of my Summer tour in Houston, TX!!!

Yeah, same. That was a good time. Look at what a good time I had!

16. FIRST tattoo?
I don’t have one yet.

Ditto. I’ve decided that if I get any permanent ink on my body, it will have to commemorate something exciting. Maybe I’ll get the New York City skyline as a tramp stamp. That seems like a good decision.

17. FIRST piercing?
Never. Yuck.

Same.

18. FIRST foreign country you’ve been to?
Canada. First and only, so far.

Same, though since 2009 I’ve been to France, Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Hungary, and Belgium. (the photo below is of me from the trip where I went to Canada)

19. FIRST movie you remember seeing?
That I remember? I’m not sure which came first, Star Wars or Toy Story.

Same.

20. When was your FIRST detention?
Never had one. Ima goodie-two-shoes.

I continued that trend, though I have been reprimanded on a few occasions for excessive talking during class. The most recent time was my junior year of college, when Quinn and I (pre-dating) flirted all through Advanced Creative Nonfiction very obviously and loudly.

21. What was the FIRST state you lived in?
Washington.

Yup.

22. Who was your FIRST roommate?
Paige

My first long-term roommate was Jenn, though. Clark room 324!

23. If you had one wish. What would it be?
Jason Mraz, eleven years younger, doesn’t smoke pot, and falls in love with me.

Apparently I was stickler about pot as a teen. I can’t wait for you to go to college in Oregon, younger me. My one wish NOW would be to be happy and successful in my chosen career path (writing, specifically TV but also anything else I have a hankering for).

ALSO, this question is not a first. “One” is not synonymous with “first,” Facebook survey. C’mon.

24. What is something you would learn if you had the chance?
Italian.

Also not a question about firsts, but this would still be cool. Spanish might be more helpful though.

25. Did you ever take FIRST place in anything?
Public Forum debate. First and probably last time that will ever happen, seeing as my partner is a flake who doesn’t take anything seriously.

WOW I was mad at Bart during this survey the first time. The year after this I took first place at a mock Congress tournament, and several times during my college speech career I took first in various events. I will definitely miss speech and debate. Maybe someday I’ll coach!

I haven’t done one of these nifty things in a while

Originally posted November 2008 (I was 16)

1) Taken or Single?
single

Taken!

IMG_7598

2) Do you like it?
not really

Heck yeah I do. Although I’m not super into this whole long distance for a year thing.

3) would you kiss your ex?
no no no

Same. Especially now that I’m a taken woman.

4) Have you ever had your heart broken?
Yes

Yes.

6) Are you missing anybody right now?
Can you miss someone you’ve never met or that you see every day?

Hahahahaha oh 16 year old Bri. You poor thing. I am missing Quinn, because of the aforementioned sucky long distance.

7) Do you want kids?
sure

Sure.

8) If yes how many?
400

That still seems reasonable.

9) Would you consider adoption?
sure, maybe

Maybe.

10) If someone likes you would you want them to tell you?
Yes

Yes. Even though I am no longer able to respond positively, it’s way less awkward in the long run if you just get it out there and then move on.

11) Do you want someone you cant have?
Yep

I don’t actually know what the 2008 Bri was referring to. Probably Sean. Maybe Dylan? And I guess I want Quinn but can’t have him because distance?
12) Do You believe in celebrating Anniversary’s?
Only important ones… like six months, one year… well not really celebrating, but recognizing them.

That’s a fair answer. I suppose I still agree.

13) Do you get butterflies around your crush?
I actually get kind of depressed, heh.

WHO ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT 16 YEAR OLD BRI?? And mostly today I just get happy because I like him a lot. (It’s Quinn)

14) Does the person you like go to your school?
One of them

I think I must be talking about Dylan here…. and no, unfortunately, that’s why we’re long distance for the moment. Because Quinn and I are in different countries for grad school.

15) Any classes together?
2 hours and fifteen minutes a day. EVERY DAY. I almost had a heart attack when I realized that…

This has to be about Dylan. I forgot about him. Apparently he now works for a skateboarding company. Anyways, no, no classes together anymore.

16) Blonde or brunette?
Brunette generally, but I’ve been known to like blonds too

Same? I’ve long since stopped having physical preferences for potential romantic partners.

17) Tall or short?
Taller than me, at least

My one physical preference.

18) Does he/she have a myspace?
Both. One deleted me, though.

Yeah this has to be about Dylan. Wait. We still had MySpace in 2008?? Also, no, Quinn does not have a MySpace, because this is not 2005.

19) Have you liked him/her as a friend?
Both are (were?) my almost-best friends.

Heck yeah. Quinn and I weren’t super close friends before we started dating, which actually worked out in our favor, I think.

Alright, there it is! If you found this fun, I might do it again. If you didn’t, well, this is my blog and I can do what I want.
