Last week I was up for 37 straight hours and in that time worked two barista shifts on two separate days. I was going to philosophize about that and the nature of time and art and dedication to things, but it’s hard to concentrate on that when I just discovered I am the only woman in my new building and I could not be happier. We call the new place the Brohort because our graduate school class is called a “cohort” and we are all bros. Continue reading “The Brohort”
I saw a thing on Tumblr
…and was feeling narcissistic. So here we go, a serious of inane questions while I’m procrastinating working on homework. Continue reading “I saw a thing on Tumblr”
I <3 My Regulars
A couple weeks ago I posted a blog about how not to be hated by your barista, and in that blog I mentioned one of my favorite things about being a barista is my regular customers. The coffee shop I work at is in a predominately residential/office area, so about 85% of our customers are regulars, and some of those people are just the best. Today, I’m gonna talk about them more specifically, because of how grateful I am that in a sea of incompetency and rudeness, some of my regulars are just lovely. Continue reading “I <3 My Regulars”
Things and Stuff ep 8
Things and Stuff is BACK! This time, with more adult-ness. Sort of. Also a fancy pen. Enjoy!
2015 Resolutions
I’m a couple days late to the party as far as posting this goes, but my little brother was visiting and I had other things to do. I think at least once a month I’m going to check in via this blog about where I am with each of these goals, because I’m an adult and I need to start following through with stuff, especially in terms of my health. Letter to Future Bri, 2014 edition
Dear Anita Sarkeesian,
[This letter has been updated since its original posting in 2013] I doubt you’ve heard of me, so let me take a moment to introduce myself. I’m Bri Castellini, a grad student in New York City studying Television Writing with a BA in Creative Writing from Pacific University in Oregon. I’m also recently coming into my own as a feminist. Last year I had a paper accepted into my undergraduate university’s undergrad magazine entitled “The Survival Sluts: Sex-Positive Characters in Margaret Atwood Novels”, which is exactly what it sounds like; analyzing Margaret Atwood’s dystopian female characters through the lens of third wave feminism. I have also started discussing the topic of feminism on YouTube, on both my personal and collaboration channels. You can see the playlist here. I’ve also been blogging a lot about feminism, which you can find a collection of here. Continue reading “Dear Anita Sarkeesian,”
How not to be hated by your barista
Alternate title: Things to consider the next time you’re in a coffee shop.
I have now been some form of barista for over a year, and have been a full time one for nearly four months. It’s not all fun and foamy leaf art, however. Below I have compiled the six categories of considerations for if you don’t want your baristas to hate you. Continue reading “How not to be hated by your barista”
My concerns for Gotham
My grad school classes are held at Steiner Studios, a fully functioning film and television studio lot. More specifically, my classroom is directly above the Gotham City Police Department set, and right next to the costume department. Basically, it’s the coolest thing ever. Only two episodes have aired of Gotham so far, and so far, I’m really enjoying it. I do have some concerns though, about its longevity. Continue reading “My concerns for Gotham”
The Bechdel Test is the Worst
I’ve spent a considerable portion of my life telling people I wasn’t a feminist because I was friends with too many men, or because I believed in equality. My journey into the heart of feminism isn’t important now, though, because I am now a woman in the film and television industry and because of this, I hear a lot about “The Bechdel Test” and I feel like we need to clear some things up. (video version of this post at the bottom) Lets jump right in:
