Playlists of the Future

I guess now is as good a time as any to admit that I’ve got a new career/writing goal in mind for my post-college life. I want to write for TV. The way I figure it, my biggest strength as a writer is dialog and I watch a ton of TV, so why not combine those passions? Novels will always be my first love, but I think the best fit for me as a writer is a TV writer. With that, I started looking into the various ways I can break into the industry. It’s not very heartening, but what I have learned is that the most important thing to have is sample scripts, called “spec scripts”. Some should be scripts for current shows to prove you can write for someone else’s characters, and some should be original scripts.

I’ve already written a spec script for Doctor Who and am in the process of refining it. I figured I’d change gears for a little while, though, and focus on some original pilot scripts. And because it’s me, I had to, of course, create playlists for my various projects. I think I’m so damn clever when making these playlists that I just HAD to share some of them with you.

“Super”, the pilot script based on my NULC story, is about writer Sophie Bricker’s experiences living with three undercover superheroes and the subsequent chaos/hilarity. These are some of the most relevant songs I picked:

You Don’t Know Me (feat. Regina Spektor) by Ben Folds

Because, get it? They’re superheroes! They have secret identities!

Hero/Heroine by Boys Like Girls

I mean, come on, this is a given.

Who Will Be Our Superhero by Chester See

Hee hee hee….

Fighter (Glee Cast Version) by Darren Criss

Well, I mean, they fight super villains….

Fame is for Assholes (feat. Chiddy) by Hoodie Allen

Because the undercover superheroes let the fame go to their heads

La La La Lie by Jack’s Mannequin

THEY LIE ABOUT THEIR IDENTITIES!

Time For Me To Fly by The Jonas Brothers

Because one of the characters can FLY

One Girl Revolution by Saving Jane

At one point, I’m gonna have Sophie become a super villain, to keep the egos of her roommates in check. IT’S A ONE GIRL REVOLUTION GUYS.

Ok. I’m done. I’m also in the process of writing a pilot for a show tentatively called “Happily Ever After”, about a girl, Amira, who wants nothing more than to be a princess. She makes a bet with a witch, who curses away her beauty, to prove that she can win over the kingdom’s Prince Liam with only her charm. For this playlist, I picked a lot of love songs, because it’s the driving theme.

Something That I Want by Grace Potter

This is a song from the “Tangled” soundtrack, and it just always puts me in a fairytale mindset.

My Only One by All Time Low

Wuv brings us all together.

Do You Believe in Magic? by Aly and AJ

Because… magic! Witch curses!

Marry You by Bruno Mars

Ellen once made me a CD with fifteen copies of just this song. It was meant as a joke because I hate Bruno Mars, but the song fits well with the theme and feel of this show.

Only You by Cartel

Love, etc.

Paradise by Coldplay

Because… fairytale!

All You Need is Love by Dana Fuchs and Jim Sturgess

It’s the “Across the Universe” cover.

King Of Anything by Sara Bareilles

King…. kingdom…. fairy tale!

Only One by Yellowcard

How many versions of this title can musicians come up with? ALL THE VERSIONS.

Do Better by Say Anything

At one point, Prince Liam WILL kiss Amira, but as he’s been falling in love with less-than-supermodel Amira, Amira has been falling OUT of love with the spoiled prince, thus rendering it NOT “true love’s first kiss.” As in, “You Could Do Better”. GET IT?!@RTAFJ?LGGF

That’s all I’ve got for now. Just thought I’d shoot ya’ll a blog as an update before I get back to work. Hope your summers are as productive as mine has been! <3

What's up, my dudes?
